Course Objective

This course is best for part-time students with a busy day schedule. Class time is designed to give students plenty of opportunities to practice Mandarin. Students will learn by having conversations and doing language learning activities. Our small class size allows every student to be an engaged and active participant. We will cover about one-fourth of the textbook in a term.

Course Levels

For absolute beginners, we will start with Pinyin. Students will learn the sounds of Mandarin Chinese, and practice correct pronunciation of the language. For Beginner 1 students with more than 30 hours of Mandarin learning experience, you can start at a later lesson of Textbook 1. E.g. Lesson 4.

A Course in Contemporary Chinese Textbook 1
After a brief overview of Pinyin, students will be learning the basics of Mandarin with practical daily Chinese conversations and applications.

In Textbook 1, there are 15 lessons total. By the end of the course students will be able to:
Give self-introductions and simple greetings
Take part in simple conversations
Buy things and ask about prices
Express likes and dislikes and give opinions
Give descriptions of someone’s appearance, of a place, of a food’s taste, etc.
Make requests and plan for future events

Textbooks are required for the course and are sold separately.
